What is Botox?

There are several brands of toxin. Although most refer to it as Botox, it's really just botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that prevents muscles from moving by affecting nerves and weakening muscles. Some other popular brands include Jeuveau, Dysport and Xeomin. glowU carries both Jeuveau and Botox. They are popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment for temporarily smoothing wrinkles and facial lines on the forehead and around the eyes1. These injections are proven to safely and effectively block the aging process.

While commonly used for forehead lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet, the neurotoxins can be applied to other areas as well, including:

  • Wrinkles in the neck
  • Jaw muscles to help with clenching (TMJ)
  • The upper lip for lip rejuvenation
  • Armpits, hands, and feet for Hyperhidrosis

Because toxin relaxes your muscles, it can also be used in the temples and scalp to help prevent migraines caused by tension in your face, head, or neck2. Botox injections can also be used to treat neck spasms, eye conditions (such as lazy eye) and overactive bladders.

How Does it Work?

These neurotoxins are an FDA-approved treatment in which diluted botulinum toxin is injected to temporarily stop facial muscles from contracting. The toxin disrupts the release of acetylcholine, the chemical process that causes muscle contraction and creates wrinkles.

By pausing the muscle contractions, Botox injections smooth out existing wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead and prevent new ones from forming for a period. The results are typically visible within 3 to 5 days after treatment and usually last between 3-4 months, and as long as 6 months.

Botox vs. Jeuveau: Which Is Better for You?

glowU carries both Botox and Jeuveau, so your provider can match the product to your goals during your consultation. Both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A injectables that temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. The main differences come down to their formulation and their approved uses.

What Is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a purely cosmetic neurotoxin developed specifically for aesthetics. It is FDA-approved to temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. Because it was designed with cosmetic treatment in mind, many patients choose Jeuveau as a modern, budget-friendly alternative to Botox for softening expression lines.

What to Expect: Preparation, Procedure, and Results

Before

The injection procedure is so simple that you could be ready for your first session immediately after a consultation.

Procedure

Your skin will be cleaned and you may be asked to make facial expressions to mark the injection sites. Then, a fine-needled syringe will be used to inject it into the muscles.

Most patients report minimum, if any, discomfort and the entire procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

After Procedure

After the procedure, patients are able to return home and usually do not require any recovery time.

Some patients experience mild redness or tenderness where injections were administered, which generally goes away within a few hours.

It’s recommended that you do not rub the treated areas for 24 hours to prevent the toxin from spreading to an area where it isn't needed, and try to avoid laying down for at least 4 hours after to let it settle.

Results

The results are typically visible within 3-5 days after treatment but full effects are seen after 14 days. Treatments last between 3-4 months, and as long as 6 months depending on the dosage received.

FAQ

How many units of Botox do I need on average?

The Botox Cosmetic manufacturer generally recommends four units per injection site. Most providers administer between 10 and 50 units total, depending on your goals and treatment history.

What's the difference between Botox and dermal filler?

Botox relaxes the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers restore lost volume and smooth deeper folds. Many patients combine the two.

How long does Botox last?

Botox usually lasts 3-4 months, and up to 6 months, depending on the number of units, your age, and your lifestyle.

How long does it take to see Botox results?

Most people see results in 3 to 5 days, and up to 8 days for some areas. The frown lines between your eyebrows and crow's feet tend to respond faster than the forehead.

Does Botox hurt?

Botox feels like a slight pinch or sting from the small needle. Most patients find it very tolerable.
